Critique of Universal Consciousness
By Noktvs
Most religions are based upon the concept that there is some type of universal consciousness that is to be attained by the aspiring acolyte as they traverse along the path. The orthodox exoteric religions, like Judaism, Christianity and Islam, generally refer to this concept as "God" and feel that one has to submit themselves to the rules and codes of their particular religious creed to attain a state of alignment with an external deity that exists somewhere outside themselves. The esoteric spiritual paths, like Qabalah, Gnosticism and Sufism, generally integrate this concept to include a more internal aspect. They interpret "God" as being present within, the divine spark in each living creature. These two perspectives are not as far from each other as many might think. They both contain the idea that there is a need to obliterate the self, and lose one's individuality in a union or merging with the divine. They both contain negative ideas of humanity and infer that there is something inherently wrong with us. They both feel that the destruction of the ego is a requirement for attaining grace or enlightenment. I feel that this concept of universal consciousness is a plague upon the earth and has caused more problems than it has solved. I will endeavor to explain why and than argue for the expansion, rather than annihilation, of the ego. What is it about humanity that makes most feel they are inadequate or incomplete? Some will argue that this is caused by being separated from the grace of God. That it is the result of sin that has isolated us from enjoying completion as an individual or a race. This idea naturally leads to a proposed solution. The solution that is maintained is to repent from our sins and give control of our life over to God. Now, each religion has their own interpretation of God and what exactly it means to live a life pleasing to God. Who sets these rules? God of course, says the leaders of each religion. Priesthood's, Pastors, Imams and Rabbis, says I. Here is the danger. When the would be disgruntled or guilt ridden aspirant to God's grace adheres to the idea that he or she must seek salvation, they in turn give up control of their own lives to those that make the rules of their respective religion. This is a very subtle means of mind control. It is a form of doublespeak, wherein the "ordained" leaders manipulate their followers while maintaining that it is all "God's Will". All religious texts are meant as instruments of perpetuating the religion they describe. This is one of the main purposes of writing things down. Standards are set, rules are laid down, morals are interpreted and all is said to come from Divine Mandate. Don't question why, just believe and follow. If you have any doubts, your faith is than not strong enough. What kind of logic is this? The logic of crowd control, the logic of subduing the masses into slavery, the logic of every religion. The concept of God is a necessary ingredient to this formula. By it the spokespersons of God can divert the truth of their despotic rule away from themselves. Who would have the right to question God? Let us say that it is He that gave these orders, and it is to Him that all should give up control of their lives. This is the means by which the religious leaders have entrapped the multitudes. I have here been speaking mostly of the exoteric or outer paths. Let us now take a look at the esoteric or inner paths, and see if they are any different. Some who have begun their spiritual path within an orthodox religion have seen past the need of such an external approach and felt it necessary to grow closer to the divine. These have been called the Mystics and Seers. They are the visionaries who have postulated an inner connection to God, which they often term the Universal Consciousness. Almost every religion has its share of such Mystics. This is so because it is only a natural development of the same formula espoused by the orthodox. The concept of giving oneself up to God has become here so internalized that the mere outer actions related to this are no longer enough. The Mystics desire oblivion. They desire death, the death of themselves, the death of their egos, the death of any control over their lives and the complete union with Universal Consciousness. They may feel that they have moved beyond the ways of the orthodox, but they have in reality come to the same conclusion, and have just taken it one step further. They are the result of the same mind control tactics that began with the respective religion they come from. The Priests, Rabbis, Imams and Pastors have done their jobs well. They respect the Mystics, canonize them in their creeds and make them a special holy class of devoted followers to be set up as extreme examples to the masses. The creative genius of William Shakespeare has given us some valuable words to remember, "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we begin to deceive." Is there no way out of this web? Is there not an alternative to this desire for annihilation? Are there any left who do not consider it sin to think and feel for themselves? Are all just sheep, longing for the slaughter? Alas, there are many, and it is to them that this article is dedicated. To the rest, the ones still caught in the priestly web of deceit, I now address the following explanation and way of release. What causes many to deny the ego? Why has it become synonymous with evil and sin? The archetype of the devil is used to cast fear in people and hold them in check against the prevailing system of mind control. Everybody knows that Satan eventually is overcome and burns for all eternity in hell with his followers, right? Who has created this myth? As stated above, it was the religious leaders of the past, who use it to subdue the masses into a cataleptic trance of mindlessness. The ego, in truth, is far from what the term has come to mean today. The ego is the self. It is the essence that makes you unique, makes you what you are, an individual who has your own thoughts, feelings and opinions. The label of selfishness is often thrown in when describing the ego. Who is not selfish? All have the preservation of the self as their main motivation of life. What of the altruistic martyrs and saints? Are they too selfish? Of course they are. What is it that drives them to do what they do? Their egos. Why do they help the helpless? To satisfy their egos. Why are they willing to die for their cause? Their egos desire this. There is no escaping the ego. There is no need to escape it in the first place. Instead of focusing on it's destruction, why not rather focus on its expansion? Transformation occurs either way. Change is the only constant. The ego is not static. It is the underlying motivation of all, regardless of others claims to have transcended it. The stigma attached to the ego has been too long accepted by the masses. Let us no longer desire to be subjugated and controlled. There is virtue in expanding ones ego. The universe is no doubt a very large place, and comprehending it seems unfathomable to most. They seek answers from others, and others are all too ready to give them answers. But these answers contain an enslavement in them. An enslavement to the dogma of giving up the self. I here argue that the truth can be apprehended without the need of destroying the self. Destruction of the self is not a means to self-realization. Self-realization comes about through expanding the ego, taking in all that one can take in, experiencing all there is to experience in life and comprehending the varieties of all one experiences. Let none tell you otherwise. These are sheep in wolves clothing, which whisper sweet words in your ear. They hold out the promise of eternal life in one hand, and behind their backs they hide a rope, with which they intend to bind you to themselves. Stand strong in yourself. Rejoice in your life. Seek and you shall find. Desire and you shall know. Question and you shall be answered. Live and you shall learn. Let not the abstract unproven lies of thousands of years obscure you from yourself. There is no sin in being who you are. Develop and do not destroy your ego.
